Dioxins are a family of environmental pollutants that are by-products of industrial manufacturing such as; chlorine bleaching, storage and improper disposal of PCB-based waste, industrial oils, smelting, herbicide and pesticide manufacturing. Once released into the environment, dioxins accumulate in the food chain, mostly in the fatty tissue of animals. High levels are found in some soils, sediments and food, especially dairy products, meat, fish and shellfish. Plants, water and air tend to have very low levels of dioxins. Once dioxins have entered the body they are easily absorbed by the fat tissue, and in females are commonly found in the breast milk.
