What are antioxidants?

Most likely you’ve seen a trail mix or yogurt commercial claiming their products are full of natural antioxidants. This word seems to pop up on an array of product’s packaging, everything from pomegranate chocolates to fermented teas. But are the antioxidants in these products really in an absorbable, beneficial state? Like many things that blow up in popularity due to greenwashing and fads, if you want the health benefits, you have to be a diligent and smart shopper. 

 

What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are substances found in fruits, vegetables and other plants that have the ability to remove potentially dangerous and damaging agents in our bodies. So basically antioxidants fight off free radicals that could damage your body. Free radicals attack healthy cells in your body, which could lead to cancer, heart disease and other serious illnesses 1.  So basically these guys are little disease fighters that help keep your body in tip-top shape.

Synthetic antioxidants vs the real deal

Unfortunately, we live in a time where large companies spend tons of money to try and trick us into believing their products are good for us. One way they do this is by taking refined food with little to no nutrition in it and spiking it with synthetic, fortified antioxidants. However, our bodies can’t use these fake antioxidants. So these are just empty calories, offering your body no sustainable energy or health benefits.
