Our feature farm this month is Rootdown Organic Farm located in the Pemberton Meadows, BC. It’s a small-scale farm owned and run by Simone MacIssac and Sarah McMillan. You can find them at local farmers’ markets in Whistler, Pemberton, Squamish and Vancouver. They offer a CSA program for their vegetable crop, as well as a pig share program. We spoke with Sarah McMillian to find out more about their farming principles and philosophies.
Q: What inspired you to start/ or run an organic farm, and what is your philosophy about farming?
A: I studied holistic nutrition and realized there was an issue with acquiring quality food, so decided I wanted to grow it myself. Our philosophy is to grow as sustainably as possible, by giving more back to the earth we farm, rather than taking away it from it constantly.
We do this by adding local, aged manures, using biodynamic (homeopathic) preparations and rotating chickens and pigs through next year's fields.
Q: What makes you unique in the organic farming industry?
A: We are small scale and only supply locally. Our animal and vegetable rotation is rare, moving the chickens and pigs every 2 weeks, for their benefit and ours. Also, our pig share program (see the website) is one of only a couple in the province.
Q: What is your favorite part of what you do and why?
A: The lifestyle: waking up with a beautiful sunrise, birds chirping, the river rushing, bears strolling through your fields and then going to bed with a gorgeous sunset. This is my office. I can't imagine it gets much better than this.
