Ashwagandha and Bacopa Monnieri (aka Brahmi) have been used in traditional Indian medicine (Ayurveda) for thousands of years and are considered Medhya Rasayanas described in Indian medicine as a group of medicinal plants that specifically improve memory and intellect.1 They have a long tradition of textual and experience-based evidence for their efficacy. As well, new studies have shown they significantly improved memory acquisition and retention.2 Both are Nootropics which is a substance found in certain whole foods (functional foods) that are considered as ‘smart’ cognitive enhancers to specifically support executive function in the brain, memory, creativity, motivation and nerve health; yeah, brain power.3
Ashwagandha is a plant where the root and berries are used to make medicine. Bacopa Monnieri or ‘Brahmi’ is a perennial herb. Best to find a good quality tincture that is either wild harvested or organic to be sure it is of high quality. Be sure to read the labels though, sometimes another herb, Gotu Kola is named Brahmi but this isn’t the herb you’re after in this tonic, make sure it says Bacopa Monnieri on the ingredient list.
Green Tea has also been getting a lot of attention, new research suggests it may boost our working memory and decrease neurodegenerative diseases.4,5
B-Vitamins from whole foods also play a profound role in the health of your brain across all age groups. Proper nutrition plays a fundamental role in supporting the structural and functional development of the human brain from conception, throughout early infancy and extending into later life.6
