Nutrition Glossary

What are enzymes?

Enzymes are chemical catalysts that are necessary for us to survive and function, and play an integral role in our health. Enzymes help to:

  • transform and store energy
  • convert food into chemical structures so we can absorb nutrients
  • make hormones active
  • dissolve fibre
  • prevent clotting
  • fight inflammation
  • balance and restore the immune system
  • repair DNA and RNA
  • assist in healing disease

What are cofactors?

Cofactors are substances that are needed for an enzyme to do their job. These are usually minerals or trace minerals that help to speed along a chemical reaction in the body.

What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are substances that help to neutralize free radicals in the body. Free radicals are unstable, electrically charged molecules in cells, that can react with other molecules and damage them. Free radicals can be produced by normal body functions (such as metabolism) as well as external sources (smoking, air pollution, poor diet).

When you have too many free radicals in your body, this leads to oxidative stress, which can severely damage molecules and lead to cell death and chronic disease. Antioxidants counteract free radical damage, helping to restore health.

What are phytonutrients?

Phytonutrients are chemical compounds only found in plants that have health benefits to our bodies. There are thousands of different phytonutrients that are now being studied in more detail, to learn how they can prevent or reverse chronic disease.

What is spirulina?

Spirulina is a nutrient-dense blue-green algae that is a vegan source of protein, essential amino acids, Vitamin B12, and many other compounds.

Our spirulina is grown in Taiwan in open ponds.

What is moringa leaf?

Moringa Oleifera is a widely cultivated, multi-purpose tree native to sub-Himalayan Asia and Africa. The leaves are rich sources of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, and also has anti-microbial compounds.

What is sesbania?

Sesbania is a flowering plant from the pea family that grows in the tropics. It is rich in bioflavonoids, which are great for maintaining healthy blood vessels, aids in nutrient absorption, and reduces symptoms of allergies.

What are annatto seeds?

Annatto seeds are an excellent natural source of Vitamin E from the Achiote tree native to the tropical regions of the Americas. Annatto is also rich in fatty acids and contain a wide-spectrum of tocopherols and tocotrienols (the different components of Vitamin E).

What is Icelandic kelp?

Kelp is a sea vegetable rich in trace minerals, especially iodine. Icelandic kelp is sourced near the oceans of Iceland which is ideal growing conditions.

What is horsetail?

Horsetail, also called shavegrass, is a rich plant source of silica.

Product Questions

What makes Pranin Organic PureFood products different?

Our products are 100% organic vitamins and minerals sourced completely from fruits, vegetables, leaves, and culinary herbs. They can be used to replace traditional vitamin and mineral pills and capsules. Every package contains vegan ingredients that you would cook with, just in a more concentrated form.

PureFood powders do not contain any nasty synthetic nutrients, fillers, binders, common allergens, or artificial sweeteners, and are easy to digest. Best of all, they are raw and minimally processed using only air, light, and water. No chemical processing or excessive heating here!

Why should I take organic food-based supplements?

Mother Nature intended us to get our nutrients from pure food sources, free from chemicals and toxicities from pesticides used in conventional agriculture. Common vitamin and mineral supplements are generally nutrients made from chemicals in a lab by humans, and are missing key components that our bodies need to absorb, retain, and utilize the nutrients.

PureFood products are concentrated, plant-based nutrients in their whole-food form, meaning that they have been processed using only air, light, and water. This helps to retain all of the natural goodness from the foods. Plant foods, such as fruits, vegetables, leaves, and herbs, are ideal sources of nutrition because they contain high levels of antioxidants and complex carbohydrates that help us create and maintain health and prevent disease.

Why shouldn't I use synthetic isolated nutrients?

Our bodies are not designed to absorb nutrients in this form. Think of it this way – if you just consumed vitamin and mineral pills and capsules, you would not survive for very long! Food is how our bodies are designed to be fueled and nourished, which is why replacing your synthetic vitamin and mineral pills with PureFood is ideal.

The composition of synthetic nutrients function very differently in our bodies. They are missing synergistic components needed to absorb, retain, and use nutrients in our bodies. When you use PureFood products, you aren’t just getting vitamins and minerals, but also the beneficial enzymes, antioxidants, phytonutrients, and cofactors that your body needs to stay healthy and strong.

Why are synthetic minerals not recommended?

Synthetic minerals can be derived from rock parts, which are really hard for our bodies to digest. In most cases, they cause stomach upset and constipation. For example, many women suffering from anemia have a hard time raising iron levels by taking traditional iron supplements, and are still anemic after years of taking pills.

Natural, plant-based minerals are actually bound to proteins, fats, and carbohydrates that are not only safe but are easily absorbed by the body without causing unwanted side-effects.

How do I know if my current supplements are synthetic?

Read the label. If a plant-based food source is not listed anywhere, and a chemical name appears in the ingredient list, it is synthetic. For example, ascorbic acid is an isolated component of Vitamin C, and is not the full-spectrum version of Vitamin C found in food sources such as amla berries, kale, broccoli, or strawberries.

Even if the product is food-based, some products “boost” the formulas with synthetic nutrients, or add sugar and yeast-based ingredients to the mix.

Learn how to read supplement labels here.

How much of your powders should I take?

Serving directions are different for each product, please check the labels. For PureFood A to Z, one serving is a standard teaspoon. For PureFood B, C, and Iron, there are scoops inside each jar. One scoop is one serving.

Please Note: the servings indicated on the bottle are based on an adult of 150lbs. For children, please adjust the serving amount accordingly based on their weight. For example, for a 75lb child, their serving would be 1/2 teaspoon of A to Z.

I've just started taking your products. Why is my stomach upset?

Our products contain concentrated amounts of cold-processed fruits and vegetables that can have detoxifying effects. Upon first starting with PureFood products, you may experience some cleansing/detox symptoms such as loose bowel movements, headaches and mild digestive discomfort. This is common and not a cause for concern. If this is the case, reduce the serving size to start and gradually increase as you can tolerate and as your system adjusts to the increased intake of fruits and vegetables.

I take blood thinning medication in addition to your products. Why am I bruising?

Adding more fruits and vegetables into your diet, like the ones in PureFood products, will naturally thin your blood. If you are currently taking blood thinning medication and start to experience bruising, please reduce your serving size of PureFood products to ¼ of the recommended amount directed on the product label and increase as you can tolerate. Do not make any changes to your medication without speaking to your doctor first.

Why do your products cost more than regular vitamin and mineral supplements?

All Pranin Organic products are made from 100% organic fruits, vegetables, leaves, and culinary herbs and are highly concentrated. For example, it takes about 6 kilograms of raw, organic produce to make a single, 300-gram jar of our PureFood A to Z!

If you went to the grocery store or farmer’s market, you would be spending a lot more to get all of that produce, and it would be mighty hard to eat it all! PureFood products make it easy to get that concentrated level of nutrients your body needs in a convenient, small serving.

Lastly, because we only use food, you can be sure your body is absorbing all the goodness in our products.

Why do I need to keep your products in the fridge after they are open?

The same reason you keep any other foods in the fridge – to keep them fresh! Our products contain only 100% organic food and don’t have any added preservatives. To preserve nutrient quality and freshness, store  your jar in the fridge once opened.

Why are your products a powder and not put in capsules or tablets?

We like to keep things au naturel and don’t want to add in any extra unwanted stuff to our products. Putting things in tablets requires you to add in binding agents to hold everything together, which can be made from impure, non-food ingredients and inhibit absorption. Capsules are often made with GMO corn or soy.

BONUS! By keeping things in a powder, your body doesn’t have to break down the capsules or tablets, so your body gets the nutrients quicker and doesn’t have to work as hard to do it.

Where do you source your ingredients?

We love to support local Canadian farmers as much as possible, so we source as much from the Vancouver, Canada area as we can. BUT, as much as we love Canada, not everything grows up here in the Great White North.

We also source our ingredients from the United States, India, South America, and Taiwan.

None of our ingredients are sourced from China due to potential food safety and contamination concerns.

How long does one jar last?

Each jar of PureFood products is a one-month supply for an adult when used daily.

Do I need to take your products daily?

Daily use of PureFood products is ideal and recommended. The concentrated fruits and vegetables used in our powders are a factor in good nutrition and provide you with essential and non-essential nutrients, as well as fibre, antioxidants, and phytonutrients required daily to help prevent disease.

Can I take a combination of your products at the same time?

Because our products are food, you can mix and match products depending on your personal nutrition and health needs. An ideal mix for most people is PureFood A to Z, PureFood B, and PureFood C, concurrently. The combination of these three products provides the essential nutrients your body needs to cope with today’s stressful modern lifestyle.

I'm pregnant. Can I still take your products?

Yes! We have an amazing Mom’s A to Z we recommend for pre and post pregnancy! Since our products are fruits, vegetables, leaves, and culinary herbs, there is no reason why you cannot continue or begin to use our products during pregnancy, but speak to your doctor if you have any concerns.

Do your products have any added sugar?

No! Any sugars present in our products are naturally-occurring from the fruits that we use. We do not add in any extra sugar, stevia, or artificial sweeteners.

Where does your spirulina come from?

Our spirulina is grown in Taiwan, in open ponds, where it is exposed to lots of sunshine.
